Wondering what that deliciously creamy sauce is in your McChicken Sandwich? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we are going to be taking a look under the (soft, sesame-topped) bun to find out!

So, what is McChicken sauce? McChicken sauce is a condiment used in the McChicken Sandwich – a popular menu item at Mcdonald’s. It also goes by the name of Sandwich sauce. Sandwich sauce is consistent in McDonald’s restaurants and franchisees worldwide.

Sandwich sauce, you say – what on earth is that?

Well, we will be getting into that in a short while.

For now, all you need to know is that McChicken sauce is a true classic at this global fast-food restaurant chain.

And it is what really sets the McChicken sandwich apart from other items on the menu.

But is it merely mayonnaise with a fancy name?

Let’s find out!

Is McChicken Sauce Just Mayonnaise?

McChicken Sauce is very similar to mayonnaise in both terms of consistency and taste, but it is actually different.

While many of the ingredients are similar, McChicken sauce also contains a unique blend of herbs and spices which set it apart from regular mayonnaise.

What Ingredients Are In McChicken Sauce?

McChicken sauce is made from a combination of water, rapeseed oil, spirit vinegar, and a range of additional spices for flavoring. Some McDonald’s restaurants use McChicken sauce made of eggs, whereas others do not.

So, it does depend on where you go.

This is a franchise after all.

Nevertheless, here is the full ingredient list for both variants, starting with the sauce that contains egg:

Water, Rapeseed Oil, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Maize Starch, Allergen Ingredient:Free Range EGG Yolk, Salt, Thickener (Xanthan Gum), Spices (contain Allergen Ingredient:MUSTARD), Lemon Juice Concentrate, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Natural Onion Flavouring, Dried Garlic, Colours (Curcumin & Paprika Extract).

And again, without egg:

Water, Rapeseed Oil, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Thickener (Xanthan Gum), Spices (contain Allergen Ingredient:MUSTARD), Lemon Juice Concentrate, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Natural Onion Flavouring, Dried Garlic, Natural Turmeric Flavouring, Colour (Paprika Extract).

The non-egg version of the sauce is all part of an initiative called McPlant which aims to test plant-based products on the market!

Nevertheless and back to an earlier question already covered; this is not simply mayonnaise.

What Does McChicken Sauce Taste Like?

McChicken, or Sandwich, Sauce is creamy, neutral, and refreshing in taste. It is a mild sauce with a very slight horseradish taste – coming from the inclusion of mustard.

With the crispy coated chicken featuring prominently in a McChicken sandwich, you cannot really get a true insight into the sandwich sauce.

Besides, they do not sell this separately on the menu.

So, unless you take the bun lid off and try a bit separately, you won’t really taste it outwardly.

But if you do so, you will notice a rather delicately tasting sauce.

Kind of like mayonnaise, similar in texture, but with a very subtle twang and kick.

Finally

McChicken Sauce; or Sandwich sauce, is essential to the McChicken Sandwich.

It really does compliment the chicken and sesame seed bun and make it what it is.

A popular favorite.

Nevertheless, it’s simply a mayonnaise equivalently.

A slight variation.

It’s something that almost everyone can enjoy; it’s mild, some would argue even quite plain.

So do order a burger, if you are yet to, and give it a try.

You’ll soon see.
