Have you come across Korean BBQ sauce? Are you wondering what it is, what it tastes like, and how it differs from the typical version? Well, here is everything you are going to want to know.

So, what is Korean BBQ sauce? Korean BBQ sauce is a variation of barbecue sauce. Instead of being tomato/ketchup-based, it is instead predominantly made from soy sauce, pear, and rice vinegar. It is typically oily in texture and is often used as a marinade for meat.

In reality, it’s actually quite unlike the American-style BBQ sauce we have all come to recognize and expect.

As we shall now see in the next few sections!

So keep reading; you could find a sauce you prefer, or at the very least, offers you something different.

What Is The Difference Between Korean BBQ Sauce And Regular BBQ Sauce?

Korean BBQ sauce is different from regular BBQ sauce in terms of ingredients, taste, and texture.

Ingredients

From an ingredient perspective, Korean BBQ sauce is based on soy sauce (compared to the tomato base/ketchup of regular (American-style BBQ sauces.)

Equally, the type and amount of vinegar varies, too. Korean BBQ sauce typically uses rice or apple cider vinegar, rather than distilled vinegar found in its ‘regular’ counterpart.

Koren BBQ sauce is also known for including pear (typically Asian pear), sometimes sesame oil along with a range of flavorings not shared with western-style BBQ sauces.

Taste

Korean BBQ sauce is sweet and savory with notes of umami.

Regular BBQ sauce however is known for being smoky, tangy, and sweet.

Texture

While similar in texture, Korean BBQ sauce is generally considered a little more oily and moist than regular BBQ sauce.

American-style BBQ sauces, on the other hand, are thick and creamy in texture.

What Is Korean Barbecue Sauce Made Of?
