What Is Donkey Sauce? ⋆ Guy Fieri’s Signature Sauce ⋆

Spread the love

Have you just heard been introduced to Donkey sauce for the first time? Perhaps you’re watching one of Guy Fieri’s cooking shows, or maybe you have stopped by at one of his restaurants (likely Flavortown Kitchen)? Either way, what can you expect from this sauce should you proceed to try it, or even attempt to make it (and a DIY recipe will shortly follow). Well, here is all you are going to want to know.

So, what is Donkey sauce? Donkey sauce is a creamy garlic and mayo-based burger sauce made famous by restaurateur Guy Fieri. It is tangy, sweet, and smooth with a subtle hint of heat. It was called Donkey sauce by Fieri in recognition of how essential mayo is in food – particularly in terms of flavor.

In fact, there is an interesting origin story of how this sauce obtained the name it did.

Apparently, according to an interview with Fieri, the sauce got its name from a conversation he had with a fellow chef much earlier in his career.

He was working on a cruise ship at the time and claimed that anyone who ordered a burger without mayo was a jack***.

Stunned, the fellow chef replied, “oh, so it’s donkey sauce”.

The name stuck and has since been adopted and in his restaurants and on his shows ever since.

A mayo mixture or garlic aioli is how this sauce is commonly described.

What Is Donkey Sauce Made Of?

Donkey Sauce is made of just six ingredients; mayonnaise, roasted garlic, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

While the sauce is typically made from just regular jarred mayonnaise, it can be made with any type of mayonnaise.

Or, the mayonnaise could even be made from scratch.

The same could be said for the garlic too.

It can either be made with pre-roasted garlic (from a jar), or it could be roasted fresh (in a skillet in an appropriate amount of olive oil).

What Does Donkey Sauce Taste Like?

Donkey sauce is a creamy, smooth, and rich sauce with garlic notes and a subtle hint of heat. It is somewhat thick in consistency.

How Do You Make Guy Fieri’s Donkey Sauce

To make Guy Fieri’s donkey sauce, all you need to do is add and mix together mayonnaise, roasted garlic, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.

From there, you can serve it right away, or better still would be to refrigerate it for 1-2 hours. This will give the ingredients a chance to infuse resulting in greater flavor profiles and depth.
